India and Sweden launched ambitious collaboration in steel and cement industry

At COP28 UAE, Sweden and India launched a more ambitious bilateral cooperation within the framework of the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT). The cooperation aims to accelerate green transition and the development of heavy industry.

The Swedish Energy Agency is taking an active role in this collaboration to contribute to knowledge transfer in strategic areas. Two sectors have been identified as particularly prioritised – steel and cement.

Work is currently underway to investigate how to concretise bilateral cooperation and knowledge transfer in the steel industry. In the cement sector, a pilot cooperation is planned between the Swedish company SaltX Technology and Dalmia. There is great potential for Swedish innovation to make an impact on the Indian green transition.

“This collaboration gives us an opportunity to disseminate Swedish innovation and results from years of technical development, in a way that can contribute to impact on a global level. The key to real impact lies in co-development; Sweden can contribute more through adjusting techniques and knowledge to the conditions in India”, said Robert Andrén, Director General of the Swedish Energy.

LeadIT was launched by the governments of Sweden and India at the initiative of the UN Secretary-General during the 2019 UN Climate Summit.
