Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSCs)

Exeger produces DSCs, the most promising of the latest (third) generation of solar cells. These work on the principle of photosynthesis. Unlike silicon solar cells, DSCs obtain solar energy using dyes, which are abundant, cheap and environmentally unobtrusive.

Exeger’s dye-sensitized solar cells serve various applications: building integrated photovoltaic, automotive integrated photovoltaic, and consumer electronics.

Exeger holds cutting edge technology for transparent and non-transparent DSCs. In addition, Exeger has invented the High Efficiency Cell (HEFFA), which combines low cost with superior performance in enhancing the efficiency of non-transparent DSCs. Not only does this product work well indoors, it is also suitable for India’s average expected outdoor conditions including haze, smog and dust.

Technology innovation

In a global breakthrough in terms of material science and nanotechnology, Exeger has integrated a unique photonic crystal into DSCs for a new class of high-efficiency cells, adding immense versatility in transparency and colour.

Exeger’s 1DPC technology is the only known technology that can dramatically increase efficiency standards in DSCs. The 1-dimensional photonic crystal can be introduced as a layer into any kind of dye-sensitized solar cell. It acts as a tunable selective mirror inside the cell, reflecting specific wavelengths of light back into the light-absorbing layer, for increased light absorption.

Early recognition

Exeger has received a grant of 1.8 million Euros under the LIFE+ project, which finances cutting edge environmental initiatives in the European Union. Under the project, Exeger will build a pilot production plant to demonstrate the large-scale production of DSCs. The pilot plant is expected to be one of the largest manufacturers of dye-sensitized solar cells in the world.

Why India?

Outlines Alexandre Askmo of Exeger: ‘We see massive market potential in India, where there is a real demand for energy access. Our product is cheap, easy to use, can be applied easily to retrofit existing buildings/rooftops/windows. There are no material limitations and there is no efficiency loss with smog or dirty windows – which are small things but have the potential to reduce energy generated with conventional solar products.’
